Point 2: Parking Lot – former site of U.S. Post office and federal courthouse
209 Eustis Ave.
It’s a parking lot now, but the majestic c. 1890 U. S. Post Office and Federal Courthouse constructed by Henderson Brandon & Son once stood on this site. Urban renewal and Huntsville’s growth from the space and rocket program led to the demolition of this building in 1954.

c. 1890 U. S. Post Office and Federal Courthouse Building

A December 22, 1881 article in the Huntsville Independent, a local newspaper, demands that Alabama’s congressional leaders prioritize the construction of a “substantial” federal courthouse in Huntsville.

The Brandons received the masonry contract for the federal courthouse.

Washington D. C. architect William A. Freret (1833-1911) designed the Federal building.
